Coventry-based Harrabin Construction has won the £6 million contract to build Coventry’s first hospice.
The trustees of the Myton Hospices have awarded the construction contract to the company, which is based in Vecqueray Street.
Gill Young, the chief executive of Myton Hospice, said it was fitting that a city company had won the contract.
“We are delighted that after such a long process it is a local company which has come up with the best tender for building the Coventry Myton Hospice,” she said.
“The hospice will be one of the largest charities in the city and be a major part of the community, so working with a city building firm, helping the local economy and bringing in new jobs is a real bonus for us.”
Work is expected to start on the new project at the University Hospital Coventry before the end of the month and the hospice, which will provide 7,000 hours of care every year and have 20 beds, is due to fully open early in 2009.
Harrabin Construction was founded in 1974 and has worked on many key buildings in the city including Electric Wharf, the Ribbon Factory and Earlsdon and Tile Hill libraries.
Managing director Brian Harrabin said the contract was one of the most high profile ever won by the company.
He said: “To get to this stage has taken a monumental effort by the Myton team and everyone in the city and region who have raised funds for six years, so we are very pleased to have won the contract and, genuinely, it means that much more to us as a Coventry firm.
“The hospital is one of the most modern in the country and we will create a hospice of similar standing.
“We are just looking forward to starting work on the project and completing a building which means so much to everybody.”
