Harrabin "Enabling out of the ordinary"

38-40 Far Gosford Street

Restoration

These Grade II listed buildings are amongst the oldest buildings within Far Gosford Street Conservation Area and were in severe danger of complete collapse due to many years of neglect. Working with the local authority and Heritage Lottery the 15th century timber frame buildings have been restored and converted into retail space and 3 residential units in the rear extension and on the upper floors.

The building was kept water tight throughout with a temporary roof to preserve the original timbers and plaster work from any further deterioration.  The structure was stripped back to the skeleton to enable all the major structural repairs to be carried out using traditional techniques and oak joints. Green oak and wattle and daub plaster were used throughout to restore the building with lime render externally.

The project won the West Midlands Built in Quality Award in 2012 for the Heritage and Restoration Category.  It  also won  in 2012 the WMCC Heritage award in conjunction with 121-124 Far Gosford Street and the Hand and Heart which were other Harrabin projects.
