King Henry VIII School New Swimming Pool, Gymnasium and Associated Changing Rooms

New build

The construction of the striking new school swimming pool facility, to compliment the conservation area, was successfully completed in the heart of an existing school environment and provide a CHP unit that feeds back into the school and electric grid.

The building was steel framed to the main structure housing the 25 metre pool. The remaining structure was traditional brick and block cavity wall with an EDPM roof. It had profiled steel sheeting and aluminium curtain walling facing the school playing field elevation.

It incorporated a gymnasium with auto vent roof lights and male and female showering and changing facilities. The combined heat and power uses modern technology converting the excess heat from the pool via heat recovery units and then provides surplus electricity to recover back into the grid.

The site was in the middle of the existing school and was serviced via a new access road created down the side of the adjacent junior school. This road passed by a number of trees with preservation orders and these had to be protected with permeable crush mats.

The site was surrounded by fencing that both prevented unauthorised access from the school children and also prevented dust from transgressing onto the existing schools and playgrounds.

All deliveries to and from site were co-ordinated to avoid school start and finish times to ensure maximum safety and avoid school congestion.

Due to the size of the curved roof panels these had to be bent on site to the required radius and this in turn required an extended compound facility for the duration of 1 week.

The main electric and gas routes however, had to be executed 300m across tarmac playground and was therefore completed out of normal school hours, the majority being during school holiday closedown.

The main glazed elevation to the playing field had to have upgraded high performance glass to withstand potential impact from a cricket ball from the adjoining playing field.
